Established in 1994, NAPWA (National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS) is a non-profit organization
dedicated to mobilizing communities across all nine provinces of South Africa for HIV prevention and treatment
advocacy. As a key player in the national HIV sector, we are part of the SANAC PLHIV CSO Forum and collaborate
extensively with civil society organizations, community-based organizations, government departments, international
agencies such as the UN and US Government, GIZ, and the private sector. Our strategic focus remains rooted in the
communities we serve, from rural and peri-urban areas to metropolitan regions.
NAPWA advocates for increased participation, representation, and access to resources for all individuals affected by
HIV, AIDS, TB, and other chronic illnesses. Our interventions are community-informed and responsive, emphasizing
locally coordinated implementation, evidence-based advocacy, and capacity building to meet the diverse needs of
people living with HIV (PLHIV). Committed to fighting HIV and AIDS-related discrimination and stigma, we integrate
a human rights-based approach in all our initiatives, striving for a healthier, stigma-free South Africa.
NAPWA wishes to appoint a suitably qualified individual to serve as a Social Worker for the Global Fund (GF) grant.
Only suitable applicants residing in surrounding districts above will be considered. Applicants must have the ability
to work in a demanding and high pressured environment, be able and willing to work long hours as well as have a
support system that allows them to travel frequently.
Purpose of Job:
The Social Worker will provide guidance, mentorship, and support for facilitators, conduct debriefing sessions, offer
counseling and referrals for complex cases and contribute to monitoring and community engagement efforts within
the psychosocial support program for people living with HIV.
Requirements:
A Degree in Social Work. Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions as Social Worker.
A valid driver’s license (with exception of person with disability). Core & Competencies: People management and
Empowerment skills Programme and Project Management skills; Financial Management Skills. Computer Literacy.
Knowledge Management skills, Customer Focus, Problem solving, Analysis, Communication. Competencies: Good
verbal and written communication, Good report writing skills, Ability to intervene and resolve conflict of a complex
nature, Problem solving, Planning and organizing work and working independently, Non-judgmental, Understanding,
Assertive and Caring. Analytical skills, Knowledge, and experience in working with the Children’s Act. Skills to
challenge structural sources of poverty, inequality, oppression, discrimination and exclusion. Knowledge and
understanding of human behaviour and social systems and skills to intervene at the points where people interact with
their environments in order to promote social well-being. The ability and competence to assist, develop, advocate
for, and empower individuals, families, groups, organisations, and communities to enhance their social functioning
and their problem-solving capabilities. The ability to promote, restore, maintain, advocate for and enhance the
functioning of individuals, families, groups and communities by enabling them to accomplish tasks, prevent and
alleviate distress and use resources effectively. The understanding and ability to provide social work services towards
protecting people who are vulnerable, at risk and unable to protect themselves. Skills and Computer literate (excel
skills will be an added advantage).
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Mentor and supervise the facilitators and support facilitators and oversee implementation.
2. Provide quarterly debriefing for the facilitators and support facilitators. The purpose of the debriefing sessions
is to allow facilitators and support facilitators and opportunity to share their psychosocial and emotional
burdens and receive counselling, since they may affect their productivity.
3. Be available on a sessional basis (one day per week per team) to provide counselling, screening, and referral
for complex cases among I ACT group members.
4. Provide de-briefing sessions to the facilitators and support facilities.
5. Ensure monthly reports are collected from the facilitators and submitted to the programme manager.
6. Attend DAC meetings as district-based personnel (rotated with facilitators). The platforms will be used to
identify psychosocial support needs of the PLHIV population within the districts and report on the
psychosocial support project progress.
7. And any other tasks as allocated by the director and program manager
