The 3rd term of the biennial (once every two years) national Men’s Parliament is scheduled to sit this year on 17-18 November 2022 at the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, Cape Town.
The “Road Towards the National Men’s Parliament” is preceded by the provincial Men’s Parliament earmarked to sit on the 1st week of November 2022 across all 9 provinces, following the 52 districts Men’s Parliaments sittings that should all take place by the month-end of October 2022.
“Takuwani Riime” Men’s Movement through the Men’s Parliament’s underlying principle is to ensure mainstreaming, coordination, and implementation of coherent and interconnected men’s sector activities through the Men Championing Change program. The Men’s Parliament Programme of Action is a continuation of the launch of the 1st biennial national Men’s Parliament that took place on 18th – 20th November 2018 leading to the 2nd national Men’s Parliament sitting on 19th & 20th November 2020.
The national Men’s Parliament 2018 declared the 1st term “the year of district Men’s Parliament” where the rollout of the 52 district Men’s Parliaments was launched to ensure the integration and coordination of the men’s sector at all levels, as well as develop collaborations and relationships with community organizations and members to ensure sustained programs, while also building and strengthening the cohesiveness of these communities in addressing challenges they are confronted, particularly the social determinants of health, with a special focus on prevention of Gender Based Violence & Femicide (GBVF) and HIV & TB.
The 2nd term national Men’s Parliament was declared “The Term of Local and Traditional Men’s Parliaments” in implementation of the Men Championing Change program to advance positive social behavioral change that subsequently results in socio-economic development, men’s health, especially the prevention of new HIV infections and violence against women and children in particular, and violence in general. The inaugural local and traditional Men’s Parliaments encompassed all 226 Local Municipalities and 882 Traditional Councils Men’s Parliaments launched and sustained between 2020 – 2022 and beyond.
All provinces and districts are requested to convene Men’s Parliament in partnership with Provincial Legislatures, District Municipal Councils, the House of Traditional & Khoisan Leaders, AIDS Councils, Department of Social Development, Takuwani Riime Men’s Movement, and all relevant partners responding to issues of men and boys.
